"Art, like morality, consists in drawing the line somewhere"
G. K. Chesterton
Lines belong to the initial and strong tools in all fine arts and, of course, in photography. In the book "Digital Photography Composition for Dummies", Simon Clark compares the lines of a photograph with the queen of the chess; when lines dominate in a photo and capture viewer's interest, the photo becomes powerful; like the strength of the queen that can move in all three dimensions: linear, vertical and diagonal.

Every type of line enhance differently a photo, due to the way it leads the viewer to the point of interest. A diagonal line is considered vigorous, powerful and interesting. In some way, it reveals energy and a kind of motion; something that rises or falls. Diagonal lines can also maximize the available space of the photo and offer more depth, when they follow the perspective of the architectural  drawings.

However, for some photographers diagonal lines express instability and weakness, thus they must be avoided. All is a matter of perception and taste.
